LAKE MUNGO

John Brawley took his first photograph when he was five. It was of his mother. He managed to cut her exactly in half with the insta-matic 110 camera. He’s been looking through viewfinders of one kind or another ever since and still working on his composition.

While no one was looking at the rental company where he was working, he was taking cameras and shooting short films, garnering an AFI nomination for his first 35mm short Bird In The Wire and a Tropfest best cinematography award for Like It Is.

Deciding that he needed to stretch his wings and went freelance in 2000. Collecting a few other awards along the way, he photographed many national TVC and Cinema campaigns, music clips and short films, both in Australia and in the US, NZ, Vietnam and the UK.

After 5 years as a freelancer in Melbourne, he realised he still has a thing or two to learn so he relocated to Sydney to complete his MA in cinematography at AFTRS.

He hopes one day to take a decent photograph of his mother and include all of her in the frame.
