John Brawley ACS is a highly regarded and well-loved DP turned director. He began his career in Australia shooting many beloved series including PUBERTY BLUES, where he used a groundbreaking mix of cutting-edge technology and period lenses to achieve the 70’s era look; the first six seasons of the award-winning dramedy OFFSPRING; the well-known UNDERBELLY series; and political drama PARTY TRICKS. John shot the Syfy/UCP series HUNTERS for American showrunner Natalie Chaidez and producers Gale Anne Hurd and Matchbox Pictures on location in Australia. He then shot THE BEAUTIFUL LIE, a contemporary retelling of ANNA KARENINA, starring Sarah Snook, for ABC Television (now on Hulu), which received considerable critical and audience acclaim and earned him an AACTA nomination for Best Cinematography in Television.

In 2017, John arrived in the US to reteam with Chaidez on the USA drama series QUEEN OF THE SOUTH starring Alice Braga. Fox’s first year medical drama THE RESIDENT immediately followed – he also shot Season 2 and made his directorial debut on the series. Between seasons, he shot the Fox pilot GONE BABY GONE for director Phillip Noyce. Then in 2019, John made his way to the UK to shoot the first season of Hulu’s Emmy nominated period dramedy THE GREAT, starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult for showrunner Tony McNamara. A number of premium series followed including Apple’s hit series THE MORNING SHOW with Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell; Bill Lawrence’s Emmy nominated series SHRINKING, starring Harrison Ford and Jason Segel, and BAD MONKEY, starring Vince Vaughn, both for Apple; NBC’s true-crime limited series THE THING ABOUT PAM, starring Renée Zellweger; and upcoming Prime Video series SCARPETTA starring Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis.

In features, John’s work can be seen in the Peter Farrelly directed comedies BALLS UP starring Mark Wahlberg and RICKY STANICKY starring John Cena, Zac Efron and William H. Macy for Amazon; Tim Sutton’s indie feature TAURUS starring Machine Gun Kelly, which premiered at Berlinale 2022 before its theatrical release; and Phillip Noyce’s indie thriller THE DESPERATE HOUR starring Naomi Watts, released by Roadside Attractions following its 2021 TIFF premiere. Other credits include 100 BLOODY ACRES starring Angus Sampson and Damon Herriman, cult favorite LAKE MUNGO (which he also co produced) and THE PERFECT HOST, starring David Hyde Pierce, which premiered at Sundance prior to its US release.

John will be directing two episodes of BAD MONKEY this season.

John graduated with an MA from the prestigious Australian Film Television and Radio School. He is a member of the DGA and ACS (Australian Cinematographers Society) and is a dual Australian/US citizen.
